Problem:
Friday afternoon ~11:30 the database started to hang. It has been up &
running for YEARS with no problem. The users could log in quickly and
display the database quickly but when they try to open a record it hangs for
~90 seconds. The developer who coded the database narrowed it down to a
problem with the link to Word documents. Each record is linked to a unique
Word document. The Word documents previously appeared in the record with the
name of the .doc file. They now ALL appear as 'Document'. The Word document
can still successfully be opened from within the record.
Occassionally we're getting an error:
"Microsoft Access can't start the application required to open this object.
An error occurred and this feature in no longer functioning properly. Would
you like to repair this feature now?"
Troubleshooting done so far:
-- We compacted & repaired the database, twice.
-- We disabled McAfee VirusScan on the server & client (found an MS article
that cited the same problem relating to Norton).
-- We rebooted the server and client.
-- We restored the database from the previous night's backup.
-- I reviewed all logs in the Event Viewer.
-- The developer reviewed the code and can't find any problems.
-- The developer & I are the only 2 who manage the network. NOTHING was
changed on the network at the time the problem started.
We're at a loss.... I would greatly appreciate any suggestions! Our staff
is at a standstill without their database!!!! Thanks in advance.....!
