Access on VPN

I have an Access 2000 Database in a folder on a server that is accessed
through a VPN connection. I can see the Network drive on my computer listed
as U:
I have been accessing the database for about a yearwithout problems,
although the database has been slow as compared to when it was on my desktop
directly. Another person has been accessing the same database on the server
in the same way. The database corrupted last week so I created a new database
and split it into a front-end (with queries, forms, reports) linked to tables
in a backend,
I placed the backend in the Folder on the Server. I placed the Front-end in
a folder on the Office PC and a shortcut to the front-end on the desktop. The
connection seems to work slower that when I was directly connecting to the
database on the server. Should the Front-End also be on the server?

hi Bill,
The database corrupted last week so I created a new database
and split it into a front-end (with queries, forms, reports) linked to tables
in a backend,
VPN may cause the corruption. Normally, VPN may stall and restablish a
new connection. While this works for normal files and a lot of different
applications, Access is vulnareable in such a situation.
I placed the backend in the Folder on the Server. I placed the Front-end in
a folder on the Office PC and a shortcut to the front-end on the desktop. The
connection seems to work slower that when I was directly connecting to the
database on the server. Should the Front-End also be on the server?
Each user needs its own local copy of the front-end. So, the answer is: No.

I understand that Access over an internet VPN is a problem for corruption and
also slow. Untill I get another setup where I can access the Database from an
outside location, I will have to use this setup. I would like to know if the
front-end should in a folder on the server or in a folder on the PC.

The front end should be on each computer..that way you don't have to
"transfer" that part over the network connection.

For speed...try the persistent connection trick.....

Other tips including the persisting connection is explained here

I am quite surprised that you get usiable speed over a vpn. Likey this must
be mostly a private network. I explain the issue of currping and why it
ocucrs on a VPN here:

I have an Access 2000 Database in a folder on a server that is
accessed through a VPN connection.

This is a very dangerous way to work, as connections across a VPN
are by definition not as reliable as a wired LAN, and thus you could
corrupt your data by opening it across the wire. Windows Terminal
Server (or some other form of remote desktop implementation) would
be much safer and substantially faster, as well.

On the local PC. You should never under any circumstances be running
the front end from anything but the local PC.

I use Access across a VPN _ALL_ the time.

It's called 'Access Data Projects' and it is vastly superior to
anything available in Jet
