Access refuses to import date format from xml file... stumped

The date fields are all M/D/YYYY or "short date".

I have an xml file generated from an Adobe Form.

I check the xml file to make sure the dates read in this same format.

When I import the form data into Access, all the dates on the form are
written as zero length strings (I think) because all the dates read
12/30/1899.

HELP!
