Access Report Export to Excel shows incorrect values

Hi

I have an Access report that has an Export to Excel option for its users.
One of the columns that exports is a text field in the database and has
values like AT, AB, 1A, 3A, 4, 5, etc

All the values display correctly in Excel except for the 3A which shows up
as .125

I have found the KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823222/en-us
which talks about exporting number incorrectly. And suggests that you
concatenate a character to the numeric values that are in a text field

Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this without having to
concatenate a character to the text field?
