Access thrashes using stored procedure

Access 2002 SP2 on XP.
I've defined a query with passthrough to a PeopleSoft odbc
driver. I've noticed that if the query returns more than
about 50 rows, there's an excessive amount of disk
activity. The more rows, the longer the thrashing lasts.
Any ideas?
