Access97/Access 2002 interoperability

Is it true that if a database is created in Access 97,
then a user of Access 2002 will not be able to relink the
tables as Access views this the same as creating a table
which is not possible in the afore mentioned situation?
We have a mixed user environment (Access 97 and Access
2002)so are unable at this time to convert the database,
but wanted to be able to link/relink tables from Access
2002. Bottom line....is there a work around?
