Access97 will not open in WindowsXP. Out of memory error.

I have recently bought a new computer with WindowsXP as the operating system.
I have installed Office97 Professional, which has worked with Windows95, 98,
and ME. While Word and Excel work well I am unable to start Access and get an
"Out of Memory" error. No other programmes are running. I understand that
there are Access97/WindowsXP problems but cannot find this particular one.
Any suggestions/help would be much appreciated

Does the new computer have more than 1 GB of RAM? If so, then your computer
needs to have Jet 3.51 installed. For more information, please see the

You may download this version of Jet from the following Web page, but you'll
need to install MS Office 97 SR-2 first:

If you need MS Office 97 SR-2, then you may download it from the following

Of course, MS Office 97 SR-2 needs to have SR-1 installed first, but your
copy of Office 97 should already have that.

Hi 69 Camaro
Thanks for your response. My computer has less than 1GB of RAM, which should
be OK according to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=161255.
I think that I have SR2 installed but will check, and will also check the
Jet installation.
Any other sugestions?

Check for malware on your computer. Viruses, trojan horses, and spyware all
take up RAM when they are running. Get a good anti-virus application, a
firewall, and spyware removal application to protect your new computer.

Open Windows Task Manager and check the PF Usage graph on the Performance
tab. Now open Access 97. Check how many more MB the graph increases while
Access is running. Does it hit the ceiling of 512 MB (or whatever size RAM
you have) and Access crash with the out of memory error? If so, then the
computer may not be configured correctly to use virtual memory.
