1. is there a way to create tagged PDFs from Word documents without having to go over to Adobe Acrobat? Isn't this capability built into Office for Windows?

2. what is it about the new Microsoft Office fonts (cambria, etc.) that makes Acrobat choke when I try to apply tagging to a PDF created out of a Word document?

1) No. It's not possible "at all" in Mac Office 2008.

2) No, but there is an optional free download from Microsoft that will do
this. (We have to be careful not to use the term "built-in" to describe it,
because the reason you have to download it is that Adobe won't allow it to
be built in!)

3) I have not heard any reports of that. I use Calibri and Cambria in all
of my documents. But I don't do PDF tagging.

Cheers

Interesting. Is it a secret? What is it called, and where can I find it? I haven't been able to find it doing a search of the MS Office support site.

May I suggest that you give this a try? thank you.

Thanks, but what good does this do me? It's easier just to open up the PDF in Acrobat and add the tags. Unless the font is Cambria or Calibri, in which case I have to change the font before making the PDF. Once again M$ (in collaboration w/ Adobe) finds new ways to add steps to my workflow and slow the production process. And apparently accessibility is not a very high priority to the folks in Redmond, either.

Dear [whoever],

My brittleness detector is sounding.

None of the regulars here work for Microsoft. We're simply users of Word who
help other users in a voluntary capacity. Venting about shortcomings here
may be good therapy for you, but after a while it becomes a pain for us to
read, because even though some of us may well agree with you "we've heard it
all before".

If you want to give feedback to Microsoft about their products, you should
send it to them via the Help menu => Send feedback.

Otherwise, just accept that you're buying software that isn't perfect.

Cheers,
