Accessing a 97 database with Access 2000- HELP!

C

Chris

Here is my situation. I have a database that was created
in Access 97. It has never been converted yet over to
Access 2000. When I try to open the database, I get the
usual message of "Do I want to convert the database or
just open it" I choose open the database. As soon as I
choose this, an error message comes up that says Record is
Deleted. I found one article on the Help site that deals
with this message but it refers to a networked Access 2000
database. It talks about using the Repair function. I did
try the repair function on the 97 version but it did not
get rid of this errror message. I can open up any other 97
database without receiving the same error message. Im
convinced its unique to this database. I really cannot
convert it to 2000 yet. Any ideas/options are appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Chris,

Sounds like corruption. Do the following:

- In Access 97 create a new database and import ALL your objects into this
new database
OR
- Use JETCOMP utility to repair whatever corruption may exist in your
database
ACC2000: Jet Compact Utility Available in Download Center
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;273956

Note: remember that since you are needing to keep it in 97 format within
JETCOMP choose Format Version 3.x. If you choose Format Version 4.x it
converts it to 2000 format.

I hope this helps! If you have additional questions on this topic, please
respond back to this posting.

Hello. I downloaded the utility and it seemed to work on
the copy that I made of the original database. My only
question is this: The original size of the database was
approx. 33MB, after running this utility, it took the size
down to about 5MB. Thats a huge difference. Im worried
that not all the info is in the new database. I read the
Readme that came with the utility but is there anywhere
that will explain what the Compact utility does? Is this
huge size difference normal after running the utility?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Chris,

Think of Compacting Access databases this way (whether using JetComp or
Compact utility built-in Access):

- The database (mdb file) is an expandable suitcase

- The objects (tables, records, Forms, Reports, etc..) are the clothes that
you add into the expandable suitcase

- As you add more clothing to the suitcase it expands say from 5 megs to 33
megs

Catch this:
- As you take out clothes (28 megs) this suitcase (database) does not
compact to 5 megs automatically as you would expect it to. It keeps empty
space in the suitcase that you had previously used

- The only way you can get rid of that empty space is to press this button
(run JetComp and Compact utility) to remove the unused space

So in your case 33mb - 5mb = 28mb of unused space was deleted.
Note: now it's very possible that you had corrupted records that were now
removed. But I highly doubt that 84% (28mb) of your records were corrupted.
