Accessing files on Server problems

Whenever I open a spreadsheet stored on my Snap Server (NAS) and try to
save it. I get an error message telling me that the file can't be
found. If I close it, the file on the server will be replaced by a
file with an arcane number code in place of the original name (such as
"XXX"), and the changes I made to the original will be gone.

I'm using Excel v. 11.1 (040909) and Tiger (10.4.1). Strangeky enough,
it doesn't seem to happen when I log onto the server with a machine
running Panther.

Does Excel create a temp file when it opens that might be getting
"confused" as to where it is?

I goofed. I forgot to put the name of the new file. It should be
"7B4D7550", not "XXX". Also, it changes each time I open it and try to
save.

We are finding the exact same thing.

We've a host of problems I'm trying to track down with Office 2004 and
Mac OS X Server files. It seems we have similar issues with Word 2004
and Excel 2004 on Tiger clients (10.4.2) and our Mac OS X Server
(Panther - 10.3.9). I've seen this issue come up in various ways when
searching this newsgroup. The issue seems predominantly an Excel issue
although all Office 2004 apps are now called into question (we will be
down-grading to Office v.X ASAP until we can isolate and test this
problem).

If one of our clients an iMac G5 running Tiger (10.4.2), opens a
spreadsheet on our server, the 1st edit seems to go OK with the file
being "saved", however upon reopenning the file, all changes are lost
(with no error message being produced!!!!). A subsequent attempt to
edit the file is permitted on open, however any attempt to save is met
with the ubiquitous "Save not complete!
File rename failed, Retry?"

This is most frustrating insofar that the temporary (arcane named)
files are saved on the server and can be openned/examined, which
sometimes actually contain the edits, other times not. I've not yet
fully divined the pattern occuring here.

If we exit all office 2004 apps, shutdown the client, all temporary
files are still locked on the server -- any attempt to trash the files
and subsequently empty the trash on the server fails with a "The
operation can not be completed because the {file name here} is in
use."

HAS ANYONE ALSO EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM with Tiger clients running
Office 2004 and OS X Servers??

We had the same problem, and our techs couldn't resolve it. We ended up
buying a new server.

Yep, that's what's happening with us. However, I just discovered it
happening with PowerCadd, but not with anything else I use.
