accidentally replaced existing file

Is there anyway to get back a document after replacing it with another
document of the same name?

(That is, I accidentally answered "yes," when asked if I wanted to
replace the existing file of the same name, and I need the old file
back.)

Practically none. If you froze your machine immediately, and were very
lucky, then an undelete utility might find it after booting in target
disk mode over firewire from another machine. The chances of something
re-using recently deleted lumps of disk is very high. As you do more
work, the chances get slimmer and slimmer.

It's what backups are for. ;-)

sigh!

If you had Word>Preferences>Save "Always make backup" checked, Yes.
Otherwise, "No", it's gone forever.

If you did have Always make backup turned on, as we advise, then look for a
file in the same folder as the original labelled "Backup of...". Open it:
it's the version before your most recent save.

If you did not have Always make backup turned on, now would be a good time
to turn it on :)

Cheers
