You might need to use Windows Installer Cleanup Utility so that all
registry entries are cleared.

But before you use this utility, are you sure you have uninstalled the
package? It is not possible to simply uninstall anything in Windows
unless you do it knowingly. Could be a virus that has destroyed the
files!!

Anyway, the utility is here:

Are you sure you are using the right disk? You need the disk marked Office.

The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility referenced by "Anonymous" here
absolutely worked in my case.
OS = Win98se Application = MS Office 2000 Small Business Edition / OEM
version
Issue: Installation of MS Office 2000 failed at point where install program
needed to restart system after installing MS Office 2000 files. The system
would not automatically restart. I warm booted system to restart.
Attempted to run MS Office 2000 Setup to complete installation.
Received the following errors:
"Installer Information - Microsoft Office 2000 Setup requires that you
complete Setup while logged in as the same user you first ran setup on."
[Note: I am the only user on my system - I never log on/off at any time]
..
"Microsoft Office 2000 Installation: Fatal Error__Installation ended
prematurely because of an error."
..
I used the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility - worked like a charm!
MS Office 2000 then installed properly.
Hope this helps!
