Acer Aspire AC713 Microphone

I have an Acer Aspire AC713 PC and am trying to use a microphone. I have
plugged it in and it doesnt work. In the control panel, under Sounds and
Audio Devices it says my microphone is a Realtek AC97 Audio. The advanced
options is not accessible. Can any tell me why the microphone I have plugged
in doesnt work. Thanks Wendy
