MS Office Update site refuses to run in Firefox 1.5.x, suggesting that I use
a browser that is IE5.5 or later.

Since the version of F'fox was released later than MS IE5.5, I suggest a
patch for the MS calendar.

Is the message you receive this one?

<<Warning: You are viewing this page with an unsupported Web browser. This Web site works best with Microsoft Internet Explorer
5.01 or later or Netscape Navigator 6.0 or later. Click here for more information on supported browsers.>>

Perhaps MS could make the wording clearer but the message is intending to convey that it's Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 5.01
or a later version of Microsoft Internet Explorer that is supported in that case, (rather than any browser dated later <g>) but
basically the browser needs to allow support for an ActiveX/downloaded control file to use the Officeupdate site. The updates are
all available through http://office.microsoft.com/downloads as separate downloads (it's only the 'autodetection' part that relies on
a specific browser version).
