Is it possible to deactivate a version of office so that I may transfer it to
another computer and still use the online activation? I know Adobe does this
and it makes transferring programs very easy and convenient.

No there's no de-activation process. Uninstall from the old (as long as it's
NOT an OEM version, in which case you can't), and install on the new. If
it's more than about 90 days (I think) from the last activation it should
activate over the internet. In the worst case scenario you will have to use
the free phone number and talk to an agent...
