Active Directory Pool or Group Syncronization?

I've come across a question which I can't find an answer to. For Active
Directory Syncronization, do you have to choose either group or pool
syncronization, OR do you have to do both? I'm having errors during
syncronization and I'm wondering if the problem could be that I've set up
both group and pool syncronization. I assumed I needed both.

Thanks

Hi Mike,

You don't have to choose between Group or Pool Active Directory sync,
they coexist :)

The Group syncs allows you to associate an AD group against a Project
Server Group such as Team Members, Project Managers etc. The Pool sync
is concerned with synchronising the staff that will appear in your
Enterprise Resource Pool. Whilst the same staff may be synched in both
synchs, they serve a different purpose.

What kind of errors are you running into with the synchronisation? Are
there errors in the queue? Are there any events being written out to
the event log? If you have ULS logging enabled, what is that showing?

Alex.

Alex,

Thanks for the response. Good to hear that they co-exist. The errors that
I am getting are normally:

Event Category: Project Server Active Directory Synchronization
Event ID: 7715
PSError: Success (0)
A general exception occurred during communication with Active Directory.
Context: UpdateResourcesToDatabaseWork. Additional Information: An exception
occurred in UpdateResourcesToDatabaseWork.. Exception Info: Thread was being
aborted.

If I go to the queue and delete all queued jobs and then kick off the sync
manually, the job goes through.

Mike,

Can you crank up the ULS logging to Verbose for the AD Sync and post
the logs? The error above doesn't give enough info as to why it's
aborting.

Just to confirm, you mean for me to turn on logging under sharepoint central
admin, diagnostic logging, correct. This is already turned on, but log files
are very small, about 12kb, and have minimal information.

I didn't have usage analysis reporting turned on, but am turning that on
now. I'm going to allow the normal process to occur overnight and see what
transpires. The system is not showing any errors since clearing the queue
again earlier today. may be some combination of events.

Thanks.
