Active Directory Synchronization

R

Ross

I am new to Project Server 2007 & am looking for some help.

First question:

I have read that you can synchronize AD with Project Server in two ways.

1st being, synchronizing AD with the Enterprise Resource Pool.
2nd being, synchronizing AD with Project Server groups.

Having read articles from MS regarding the differences I am looking (to
start with) for confirmation as to what exactly they mean. My understanding
is that using the Enterprise Resource Pool is a one-to-one synchronization
(one AD group to one PS group) where as using Project Server groups
synchronization is a many-to-many sych process (many AD groups to many PS
groups)

Is this correct?

Ross:

The AD synch is more like a two-step process. First, you synchronize all of
your resources to the resource pool using a single active directory global
group, then the system synchronizes resources to Project Server security
groups using one AD global group corresponding to one Project Server
secuirty group. So, you setup as many AD global groups as you need to
synchronize to security groups. Each security group can synchronize to only
one AD group. Does that help?

Thanks Gary for your reply.

I think I understand that. What I've done (for testing purposes) is created
3 groups. 1 called PRoject Managers, 1 called Team Members & 1 called
Project Resource Pool. I've made Project Managers & Team Members members of
the Resource Pool group.

Then synchronised the Project Resource Pool group to the resource pool.

I have another question to ask about the above (because it doesn't seem to
synchronize successfully everytime) but I just wanted to know if this is the
correct way to do things, as you have mentioned?

Thanks Gary for your reply.

Whilst I was testing the synchronization I created 3 AD groups.

1 called "Project Resource Pool"
1 called "Project Managers"
1 called "Team Members"

I have made "Project Managers" & "Team Members" members of the "Project
Resource Pool" group. I have then synchronized "Project Resource Pool" to
the resource pool.

Before I ask a separate question (as the above doesn't synchronize
successfully everytime when requested manaully) I just wanted to check if the
above method is the correct way to synchronize??
