Active Directory Synchronizing problem

S

Sly

Hi,

I hope someone has seen this problem before. I have Project Server 2003
(with SP1) running on Windows 2003 Server Standard and SPS using MSDE 2000
(SP3). I'm trying to synchronize to an Active Directory group called
"Project" and it would fail. Project Server installation is on a machine
that is a domain controller. Below are the two events that appears in the
Event Viewer whenever I try to synchronize. I've uninstall/reinstall WSS,
MSDE, and Project Server several times now and still encountered the
problem. I've even obtained post-SP1 from Microsoft (KB885224) but still no
go. If anyone has any insight, that'd be appreciated! This may/may not be
related to my other problem, which is an inability to send out email
notifications. My next move is to demote this machine to a member server
and see if it'll be happier.

Thanks!

I had this problem and it was because I didn't do a step for installation.
On the Project Server 2003 Setup screen (the very first one, with a link to
the Readme, Installation Guide, Server Installation, etc.) there is a link
(button, whatever you call it) for Microsoft Windows Sparepoint Services. In
that section there is the Windows Sharepoint Services Configuration Wizard.
Once I ran through the wizard I was able to sync with AD.

Hi Keith,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I've done the WSS Configuration Wizard
as part of the installation procedure already. Currently, I've demoted my
server to member server and reinstalled everything again. Still getting the
same failure! I'm starting to think it's something wit the server/OS itself.

You may be having the same problem we are having with AD sync. Active
Directory will sync just fine with the user accounts, but not with the
resource pool. We have contacted MS support. They provided a beta fix which
did not work. I have not seen anything from MS to address the problem yet.
If you can't sync with either the user accounts or the resource pool you may
have a different problem. One thing you need to make sure is that you have
matching groups in AD to go with the groups in Project Server.
Hope that helps.

Hi Russ,

I think we have a similiar problem, but I've been focusing on the resource
pool. After several days of hair-pulling, I've discovered something quite
interesting. I had been trying manual updates of the resource pool using
the "Update Now" option under Server Configuration. Out of curiousity, I
tried the "Update every" option and lo and behold, it actually sychronized
to my AD "Project" group! The users contained in the "Project" group now
appear under Resources. So then I decided to try the "Update Now" again and
it failed immediately. Switching it back to "Update every" and messing
around with the synch time, it did synchronize again.

Did you apply the hotfix KB885224 from Microsoft? I'd be very interested in
hearing what you learn from Microsoft? I hope Microsoft can fix this
annoying problem.

What you can check if the field 'description' is filled with some text. We
had the same problem before, and after entering information in the
description, the sync worked...
