active synch synchronisation problem

For no obvious reason, my Packard Bell Pocket PC has stopped synchronising
with my PC, which runs on Windows PC. When connected, it synchronises
Calendar, Contacts, Mail, Notes, and tasks, then with one file remaining to
synchronise, the active synch window disappears, but the icon on the taskbar
shows it's still trying to synchronise.
I updated to Active synch 4.1, and did a soft reset on the Pocket Gear, but
it made no difference. I haven't tried a hard reset, as I can't get onto
Back up or Restore, so I'm worried about losing data.
Any ideas, anyone?
