Hi;
Is Active X necessary and/or safe to install? I've read things about
it that make me uneasy having in on my computer.

Good questions, and a good idea to have such concerns. There is
certainly a potential for doing harm in ActiveX controls, and you should
be leery of downloading/installing them IF they are not digitally signed
by a trusted source.

The ActiveX controls you install for the MS updates sites are digitally
signed, and are safe to install. And, yes, they are necessary for many
of the MS websites to function correctly.

I recommend reading this site
(http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011403101033.aspx) and
others you may find that describe what ActiveX controls do, the need for
them, and the ways they can be exploited. Just be dubious in your
readings when you come across the "doom-n-gloom" postings from those who
either don't understand or who just enjoy spreading scary rumors that
have no basis in fact. :)
