AD and netbios

I have heard a rumor that if you shut off netbios on your network that
Active Directory will fail because AD is dependant on netbios. I don't
believe this and I cannot find it documented anywhere. Can anyone please
advise? And could you tell me any good reasons to keep netbios on your
network?
