AD Resource pool synch

M

Mike Mahoney

I haven't really used this feature and had hoped this mechanism could
be used for populating the resource pool without creating PWA user
accounts but it does not seem to be the case.

Is this option functionally any different from synchronising the team
members group with and AD group?

Thanks

Mike,

Synching with AD is a useful device for creating "Users" of PWA as it
eliminates the slog of manually entering user names, email addresses and
windows user account details as well as avoiding tpyos <G>.

You can add resources to the Enteprise Resource Pool from AD if you care to
use the option available from the Assign Resource dialogue box when editing
Enterprise Resource information in Project Professional, this will result in
the newly added resources also being created as users although from memory I
believe that using this route the newly added users do not belong to any of
the security groups.

If you are looking to create resources without creating more users of PWA
the only option is to create "Generic Resources".

As far as being a different function to AD synch with groups I believe that
the only difference is that newly added resources do not belong to groups
whereas newly added users will have the "assign as resource" (cannot
remember the correct term from memory) option enabled. As far as I am aware
AD has primacy over Project Server so changes in AD will impact on
membership of groups in Project Server if you have synching enabled.

Thanks Dominic,

but to answer my own question:

1. Synching groups creates or updates users (adding them to the
selected group)
2. Synching resources creates or updates resource and users (adding
them to team members group and the resource pool)

regards

Mike
