Add a barcode to a Publisher Merge Document

I would like to have a barcode placed beside an address block that will
go on a letter that goes into a window envelope. Because of size
limitations of the window envelope I would like to use datamatrix bar
code. This is a square barcode that UPS among others uses.
Unfortunately unlike many barcodes that you use like fonts this one
doesn't work that way.

Generally these codes are made by Activex controls. Unfortuneately if
I use Word because the box is bigger than the font size, I can't line
up the box with the top and bottom of the address block.

It's easy to do in Publisher, however, Publisher doesn't support
Activex controls (or at least I haven't figured out how to get them in
a document).

I did find a program that can be called with a shell command or other
ways and a value can be passed to it and the resulting barcode
generated but I'm not sure how I would go about doing this.

I'm thinking a macro that would call the program and pass the merge
field value and tell it to be placed at a specific place on the page
but I'm not sure how to go about doing it.

I do know a little vba code but am not sure in this case where to begin.
