Add appointment from web

I have seen several times where a website says "Click here to add this event to your Outlook calander." This is generated in the form of a url, not an iCal. If you click on it, an Outlook Appointment pops up with all of the data compled for you to look over and click on the "Save and Close" button.

I would REALLY like to know how that is done.

Most likely the web application is generating the iCal item on the fly.
