Office 2003 only supports 16x16 icons in toolbars. If you turn on the "Large
icons" option you simply get the 16x16 icons scaled up to a larger size which
looks ugly. It would be nice if Office had proper support for large icons and
came with a toolbar icon set which included icons in different sizes (e.g.
16x16, 32x32 and 48x48).
This would improve usability. Compare, for example, the toolbar icons of
Mozilla Thunderbird and Microsoft Outlook. The Thunderbird icons are much
easier to hit because they are larger and better positioned. (The most often
used button "Get Mail" is at the far left of the window in Thunderbird so you
can simply slam the mouse left whereas in Outlook you have a useless grabber
bar on the far left).
