add exsisting email address to new contact

I am trying to add an email address to a new contact in a
personal contacts folder.

I allready have the email in another personal address book
so I thought I could click on the address book icon and
pick it up from the othe personal contacts folder but I
get the error "An Outlook Address Book entry cannot be
used as an email address in a contact" Why is this?
Is there any way round it other than copying & pasting the
address?

That's because there is no Address Book in Outlook. The Address Book is
merely a view of your Contacts Folder(s). That's why you get that error
message.
Enter and edit data in the Contacts Folder(s), not the Address Book view.
