Add-in for Outlook 2000 -- can't download

Article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/238782 says that this add-in
(called the Outlook 2003/2002 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup) will work
for Outlook 2000.

However, when you go to the download page, you are not able to download the
add-in unless you pass Genuine Office Validation.

My copy of Office 2000 is genuine, but validation is only supported for
Office XP, not for Office 2000.

So, there's an add-in that is documented as working for Outlook 2000, but
you can't download it if you are running Office 2000.

Is there any workaround for this, short of buying Office XP? Office 2000
is in the Extended Support phase until 2009, so downloads for this version
are SUPPOSED to still be available from Microsoft sites.

does the message say outlook 2000 failed? normally, they just let you have
the programs for that version since it's not supported by GA. Do you have
another office app installed that might be causing the failure? It will
check for all apps in all versions of office.

I don't have ANY versions of Office past Office 2000. It says
specifically:


Why didn’t my machine complete validation?

No Office products eligible for validation were found on this PC. This
may be due to one of the following:

- The version of Office installed on this PC is earlier than Office XP.

....


So, I can't pass Office validation since I have ONLY Office 2000 and no
Office XP installed here.

The version of the program was apparently written (and mostly supported)
for Office 2002 and Office 2003, but it is documented by Microsoft as
working for Office 2000.

Except you can't download it.

Bummer.

I e-mailed Microsoft support; we'll see what they say. I fear that they
will say that since Office 2000 is in "extended support", there's not
much they will do for me.

P.S. Another complaint -- the description of the add-in says in a couple
of places that it "automatically" backs up your PST files and allows you
to "automate" the backup process on a schedule you set.

Apparently, from a close reading of other documentation, it doesn't
"automatically" do anything; it just adds a File/Backup menu item to
Outlook... and it can automatically remind you to do this.

I wish it would really, truly, automatically do a backup for you with no
user intervention (other than initial setup).

It should bypass GA if the app is for earlier versions... but for better
ideas:

I used a batch file to copy my pst and then start outlook when the copy was
finished... I replaced the shortcut I normally used to open outlook with
one to the batch file. I always felt it was better to copy it before outlook
started because I wouldn't have shutdown problems. I could bypass the copy
by using a different shortcut to open outlook.

You can google for the backup addin, it is hosted on some none MS sites, no
validation required.

I hesitated to download it from other sites... as the code could be

Thanks for the advice, but I, and most people at my company where I would
also like to use this, have 500 MB .PST files. The open would be pretty
slow.

The download page doesn't KNOW if the app is for earlier versions -- as I
said, it says it is for Outlook 2002 and 2003, but it is also documented at
MS KB article 238782 to work with Outlook 2000.

But users of Outlook 2000 (Office 2000) have NO WAY to download the add-in
from Microsoft's official site.

Bummer. Bad planning. Etc.
