Add Ins

Nate Rosenthal

I have been having some trouble with addins in Outlook lately. I have
Outlook 2003 and my machine runs Windows XP.

I had downloaded pfbackup.exe, which automatically backs up outlook (.pst).
After installation, it would leave a menu link called backup. It would be in
file just under archive. I used it for years and then suddenly it
disappeared and I can't reinstall it to show anymore.

More recently I downloaded something called Alex Desktop, which converts
attachments to .vcf files and saves them in Contacts. I am a recruiter so
this is good for me to be able to quickly file all my resumes into
asearchable card system. This put a link along the top, saying parse
resumes. It worked for a couple of days and then the link disappeared. I
mentioned this to the developers and they suggested that I go to Options,
Advanced, Com addins. It was unchecked, but each time I tried to check it
off and hit OK, the check disappeared. I tried repairing and uninstalling
and neither worked.

Both problems seem to have the common thread. What is my issue? Does this
have something to do with .NET Framework?

I think it worked. The pfbackup is back the way it was. The Alex Desktop
returned to it place, but when I exited Outlook and tried to get back i, I
got an error message stating that an addin was causing problems. I disabled
it and everything is fine. That leads me to believe that the problem is a
bug in the Alex Desktop program, rahter than with Outlook. Am I correct?

Go to Help, About, Disabled Addins. Are both of these listed there? If so,
enable them. They may get disabled again, as outlook disables addins that it
identifies as causing issues.

It's likely the desktop add-in... but are there any other addins installed?
Some poorly written addins are a problem but outlook can't identify the bad
one so it disables the wrong one. That's probably how the backup utility
ended up disabled. It could be why desktop is disabled.

Are you using the V1.7 beta version? have you checked to make sure your
system matched the program's system requirements, particularly the .Net V3.5
requirement? Have you tried contacting Hireability's support personnel?

ALEX Desktop works with Microsoft Outlook 2007 or 2003 on the Microsoft Vista
and Windows XP platforms. The ALEX Desktop works with standard Outlook email
configurations for POP3, Exchange or IMAP (for more information on IMAP read
#11 below).

Windows Vista and later versions of Windows XP come with the .Net Framework
3.5 installed. This is good as this is a system requirement for the ALEX
Desktop. If you are running an older version of Windows XP and haven't gotten
the latest updates from Microsoft in a while, you might not have the .Net
Framework 3.5 installed. You will need to install it first before installing
ALEX Desktop. ALEX Desktop automatically checks for the .Net Framework 3.5
upon installation, and if it is not found on your computer you will be
prompted to install this component from Microsoft. It's a good idea to go to
Microsoft's website and check for the latest system updates - like the .Net
Framework 3.5. Once these updates are installed you will probably be prompted
to reboot. After that you can install ALEX Desktop which should take just a
few seconds to a minute or two tops. For more information visit the ALEX
Desktop Documentation.

Thank you very much. I was actually surprised that you referred to it
directly. My understanding was that Alex Desktop was something developed by
someone in my industry and that not a lot of people would be familiar with
the particulars, even MVPs like yourself.

I have seen your name for many years in these help gtoups, so you obviously
have a lot of knowledge of what is good or not out there. If you can
advise, is Alex Desktop considered a good program for converting docs to
vcfs. I may need to buy it and before I pay, I'd like to know if I am
getting the best thing for the money.

As a recruiter, I have been looking a long time for something that will make
resume input into a searchable database easier. Right now I have filemaker,
but one has to individually input each candidate. I have a couple thousand
that have never been input.

Thoughts???

My problem was with 1.7. I had mentioned it to the people at Hireability and
they just sent me 1.8 yesterday. I am not having any problems with it
.....yet. It is going to be Beta for a couple more weeks.

I know how to use Google.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with that software or any like it.
Hopefully, the new version the HireAbility people gave you will continue to
perform well.
