Add line number to the document itself (and not just in margin)

Hello,

I know Line Numbering can be turned on in word and that's great. But
the limitation with that is that the Line Numbers are only visible in
Print Layout view and when printed.

Here's what I want to do.

I have a word document that I want to convert to HTML to publish to the
web. People are going to comment on the document and I need to have
line numbers show up in the webpage for people to reference. I don't
want to handcode the line numbers on every line of the page.

So I am wondering if anyone knows a way to 'save as' HTML from word
with line numbers on every line?

I tried a macro to prefix a line number to every line but that's not
robust and it breaks when the document is complex, includes tables and
images.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Line numbers would be pointless on the Web because lines will wrap in a
different place depending on the size of the browser window.

What's wrong with normal "paragraph numbering"?

That is directly supported by HTML and will simply pass straight through.

But take note of what Suzanne says: on the web, you have no idea how long or
how wide the "page" is, so you have no idea how long a "line" is.

Numbering paragraphs is fine: numbering lines is not possible.

Cheers

Make your posting a pdf. You'll have your line numbers.
