Add Rows or Colums to Embedded Excel Spreadsheet

Can anyone help me with this? It seems simple but Word won't let me do
it.

I insert an Excel table into a Word document. I need to add a row(s) or
column(s). How do I do that?

Stretching it by grabbing it just resizes it as if it were a picture.

This has bugged me for years.

Hi Andy-

First you must have Excel installed, which I assume is the case. Second, the
Excel file must be inserted (Insert>Object>From File or MS Excel Worksheet)
in the doc as an embedded or linked object or by using Edit>Paste Special.
(If simply copied/pasted you don't have an Excel table, you have a Word
table & need to deal with it accordingly.)

Then you can modify the file by double-clicking it. That will open the file
in Excel & you can make any changes you wish, including stretching the
window to show more/fewer columns & rows or even a different sheet.

When done, click in the doc window or Quit Excel.

Taz -

That's what I've been doing but I still can't change the way it
displays on my word document.

Yes, the value of the cells that are already displaying will change if
I change them in Excel, but I can't figure out how to make it go from
say 10 rows to 20 rows on the Word document. I can add them on the
embedded worksheet but they won't display on the Word doc. The default
seems to be 10 rows by 5 columns.

What am I missing?

Hello again-

Rarely use that technique, myself (I typically work with existing XL files
using links), but you appear to be correct. If you insert a new XL object in
a Word doc it does indeed seem to be limited. I haven't found a way around
that as yet. Have tried adding switches to the EMBED field code & what
little else I know & can get no more columns than 5. Did manage to increase
number of rows, but that alone won't do much good (and I'm not even certain
what enabled it).

On the positive side, that limitation _does not_ apply if you create the XL
file as a separate file with more rows & columns, then embed it as an object
in Word. Trying to resize it later does present the same problem. Links,
OTOH, adjust when updated.

Actually, the only way that I have been successful in changing the size
of an embedded spreadsheet is by copying and pasting in the Excel range
as a link, then manually changing the cell reference via the Change
Source option in the Links Dialog box from Edit>Links. I tried doing
that with a spreadsheet that I created from within the Word document -
that is, creating it and then saving it as a linked document - but
Excel won't let you Save at that point - only lets you save a copy
which is not the actual linked document.

Unfortunately, OLE is implemented differently in MacOffice than WinOffice.

It appears that changing the size of the object requires that it be based on
a Link to an existing Workbook file or else be re-created/re-inserted after
changes are made.
