Add template to New Office Documents in Start Menu

I'd like to make templates for new document types available via the "New
Office Document shortcut in the Start Menu. I've found all the existing
templates in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033 but saving
there doesn't work, and also there is no apparent information there as to
under which tab in New Office Documents it will be found.

Can anyone help?

The location of templates can be changed by clicking on
Tools/Options/File Locations and then either User templates
or Workgroup templates.

If you place the .dot file in either of the two locations
shown, they will be included in the File/New template menu.

The User/Workgroup templates are not the ones I was referring to, but rather
the "built-in" templates that come with Office, which can be accessed from
the START menu on the desktop, before ever running any Office application.
In the START menu are two shortcuts, "Open Office Document," and "New Office
Document." (I'm using Office XP, so these show up automatically when Office
is installed.)
Clicking on the latter presents a tabbed window with many different
categories of Office documents. That's where I'd like to add a few of my own.
The actual .dot files for these are located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Templates\1033\, but there's more to it than just copying my template
file there in order to get it added to these, let alone into the desired tab.
That's where I need some help.
