Add text to page numbers in TOC

Hi,

I don't know whether it is possible or not but is there a way to
automatically add text to a page number in the TOC?

For example, if I type "TOC" and insert a page number starting from 1 in a
footer, the page number in the TOC is displayed as 1. What I'd like is for
the page number to be displayed as TOC-1. The only way I can do this is to
actually physically type in "TOC" before the page number in the TOC. The only
problem with this is each time the TOC is updated, the text has to be
physically typed in again.

I've used Heading 7 as the heading for Appendices so that I get page numbers
of A, B, C and so on but can't work out a way of using this for more than one
letter.

I know how to insert page numbers and create TOCs.

Any ideas?

Hi

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I've used Outline Number feature in Word 2003 (Modify, Format, Numbering) to
set up headings. I've used Heading 1 for chapters and Heading 7 for
appendices (set up by typing in the word "Appendix" in the Number format
field before the displayed numbers, selecting a number format of "a" and
deleting the numbers displayed in the Number format field. This gives me
chapter headings of "1. Chapter title" and "Appendix A Appendix title" in the
document ". In the footers I've included the Chapter number and appropriate
level so that the page numbers in the footers are 1-1 and A-1

These give me the listing I want in the TOC (as in 1. Chapter title....1-1
and Appedix A Appendix Title ...A1). All good so far.

What I'd also like to do is set up a heading for, say, a Table of
Abbreviation. The heading in the document would be Table Abbreviations (not
numbered), the footer page number would be ABB-1 and the listing in the TOC
would be "Table of Abbreviations.....ABB-1).

The problem is I can't seem to change the number format (Modify, Format
Numbering) to anything other than what is listed in the Number Format style
field and, as ABB is not listed, I can't use this. Am I missing something?

Also, as an aside, I read the Automatic "intentionally blank" page article
listed on your site (which has now been added to my favourites). Where do you
include the code described in this article (is it placed in the footer)?

If you're using A, B, C numbering for your appendixes (as part of the
Heading 7 style), then you should be able to get the "numbering" in the page
number by using "Include chapter number" (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/ChapterNumber.htm).

Further to my last post, I've worked out where to place the "intentionally
left blank" code (should have downloaded the example in the first place)!

I don't think there's a way to do what you ask wrt the Table of
Abbreviations and such, but it seems to me that this sort of numbering is
really not very appropriate for front matter, anyway. Why not just use the
conventional lowercase roman numerals for *all* the front matter?
