Adding a shadow to a group of pictures

I have a group of several pictures that I've made a collage out of. I would
like to add a shadow behind the entire group. When I've tried, I end up with
shadows behind each individual picture even though all of them have been
grouped. I've also tried to save the group as a picture and insert that saved
file and I still end up with shadows around each picture. Any advice on how
to do this? Thanks.

Another possible option:

Cut/Copy the grouped object, use Paste Special to paste it back in as EMF,
PNG, etc., then use Picture Tools> Format - Shadow Effects.
