Adding a signature to Word Documents

I often receive contracts that i must sign and return. Mostly they come in Word format, but since I need to sign them I must print them out, sign with a pen and then fax them. The quality of the document is degraded by faxing, and it seems totally silly to do it this way, since e-mail is so much more efficient and the integrity of the document would be preserved that way.

Is there an elegant way to add a signature (not a digital certificate, but a real signed name that looks like ink) to a word doc...one where it doesn't create an ugly white-space box around the signature that is being added? Seems like an obvious and useful feature that Office should have in it, but I haven't found it.

Scan your signature and save it as a graphic (cropping as needed). Save the
graphic file as an AutoText entry for ease of insertion in Word documents.

Thanks.
I see that you mention cropping the signature, presumable
to eliminate white space that blocks out whatever is on
the document your are inserting to.

Is there any way to make the whitespace around the
signature transparent so that it doesn't obscure the box
or line (features of most contracts that require
signatures) that the signature is supposed to appear
in/on?

This would be something you could do in a graphics program. GIFs, for
example, can have a transparent background. Try posting in
microsoft.public.word.drawing.graphics to bring your question to the
attention of users more knowledgeable about graphics.
