Adding arguments to the Message shape of UML Sequence Diagram

In the Arguments page, there is no Add button to add an argument to a
Message shape. I believe that I have to create an argument first somewhere
else, then select it via drop down in the Argument page. But I can't find
any documentation on this topic. Please help.
