Adding Autoshape Connectors in Word 2003?

I am having trouble adding Autoshape Connectors to my Word 2003 document to
connect two Autoshape Flowchart shapes...The Connectors are disabled. All of
the help resources that discuss how to create Autoshape connectors start with
"Select the desired connector from within the autoshape...ETC." but I can not
as the connectors are disabled. Any suggestions?

Connectors in Word 2003 work only in a drawing canvas (Insert | Picture |
New Drawing).
