Adding background blacks out part of onscreen document

Most of my documents have a background added. When this is done the screen
blacks out portions of the document. When I go to "preview" the blacked out
parts are NOT there. The blacked out portions are not affected, however, it
is impossible to read the document with the blacked out portions - to say
nothing about attempting to paginate.
What can be done to correct/aleviate this problem?
