Adding conditional format to fields in Project 2000??

I would like to create a column that would use graphical
indicators to show whether a task is behind schedule, on
schedule or not scheduled to start yet. I have tried to
input formulas to do this with no success.

Can you describe the steps you have taken? It is hard to troubleshoot
without further description
Is the project opened in read-only mode?

You were on the right track.
Did you take a baseline and compare current schedule to baseline?
