Adding contacts - but already exist

F

Before I start, I promise to be v-e-r-y careful looking for replies lest I
incur the ire of Mr Angry.
In Outlook 2007 I search for a contact but nthing is returned (ditto e-mails
and calendar), so I add a contact again which I thought was already there. As
soon as I add it, a 'duplicate' message appears with the choice to overwrite.
If I do so, both the old and new contacts are visible. I recently created a
new profile because all my contacts had disappeared. I have deleted the old
profile.
What file could the invisible contacts/calendar be in and how can I bring
them into my new profile?

Describe the exact steps you're using to look for a contact.

Click Contacts in LH menu bar, go to search box 'Search All Contact Items'
top RH of contacts list and type in name or e-mail address - enter. That's it

Is it any different if you use Advanced Find?
