Ron:
No, that procedure will not work for the American Heritage. The American
Heritage is an "application", not a "dictionary" as Word knows them.
You should not confuse "Dictionaries" and "Custom Dictionaries".
A "Dictionary" to Word is a compiled binary object that runs as part of Word
and provides the core spelling functionality. Nobody but Microsoft (that I
know of...) makes them for Mac. You can buy PC versions, but they won't run
on the Mac. You can buy previous versions, but they won't run on OS 9/
Office 2001.
A "Custom Dictionary" is a text file. It is limited to about 35,000 words.
You can have "several" custom dictionaries. But even if you could extract
ALL of the words from your American Heritage (and trust me, the AH program
won't let you...) you would be pushing the limits on Word 2001. You would
need ten custom dictionaries, and you could add Words to only one.
Sorry: You are stuck with it the way it is. When you installed the
American Heritage, it should have installed a template that enables you to
look up words in the American Heritage by right-clicking them. There should
be a file named ahdlookup.dot in your Word Startup Folder. If it isn't
there, search for it and copy it there. If you cannot find it, contact
American Heritage Technical Support at

Hope this helps

Office:mac 2001, 9.2
I saw a post by Beth Rosengard dated June 6, 2003 that told of a
procedure to add dictionaries. I just purchased the American Heritage
4th Edition, E Version and was wondering if the same procedure would
work. This has about 230,000 words as well as a Thesaurus, it seems
to have loaded for Power Point even came up in the formatting drop
down but not Word; this dictionary is made for a Mac. Would this
augment the Entourage dictionary also? Does the adding in help all of
the programs of Office:mac...
Thanks Beth,
Ron
