Adding items to QAT while viewing .doc files causes QAT item to di

Operating environment:
Windows XP
Windows Vista
Microsoft Word 2007

This describes a problem where additions made to the Word 2007 Quick Access
Toolbar while viewing .doc files do not persist after closing and
re-launching Word. Note that this problem only manifests itself when adding
third-party items to the QAT, not when adding Microsoft Word’s ribbon
elements to the QAT.

Steps to reproduce the problem: It will be necessary to have any of the many
third party add-ins installed. In this particular case, we are using our
MathType 6.0a

1. Launch Word 2007 and open a pre-2007 file (.doc).

2. While viewing the .doc file, choose any of the buttons located under the
MathType tab in the Word ribbon. Right-click it and choose, Add to Quick
Access Toolbar.

3. Close Word.

4. Launch Word either from the Start menu or by double-clicking the original
..doc file.

5. Note the item that was added to the Quick Access Toolbar doesn’t persist.

It has been suggested that Word 2007 has the ability to save Quick Access
Toolbar items either in the context of a specific document, or such that it
is available in every session of Word. However in this test the saved item
does not persist in the original .doc file or in any new or subsequent
session of Word.

It could be the third-party customizations are added programmatically which
means they aren't permanently stored anywhere and are created when Word
starts and (hopefully) removed when you exit Word. I don't have any add-ins
that use this method available to test this but it would make sense. (Most
of them would dirty the Normal template and I'd delete them rather than try
to use them.)

I'm not familiar with the MathType add-in but perhaps someone here can
confirm that's how the customizations are added. Do you know if it's a COM
Add-in or a global template?

Beth,
Thanks for your comments. To answer your question:
The MathType add-in is added by the setup program and places the template
under the Office 12/Startup folder. This produces a MathType tab and Ribbon
in Word 2007. What I did was simply right-click one of the Ribbon buttons and
added it to the QAT. The MathType add-in is a global template.

Are all customizations to the QAT resident in the Normal template? If so,
this still doesn't explain why the MathType item vanishes after the Word
session is closed.

QAT customizations aren't stored in the Normal template. They are stored in
a file named Word.qat. Unless you specific otherwise, QAT customizations are
added to this file.

If you have a tab on the Ribbon called MathType then this wouldn't be
created programmatically. I tried the repro steps you provided with global
template I created that has a custom Ribbon tab and I can't seem to
reproduce the behavior. Perhaps there's something in the customUI for the
MathType template that is preventing the added button from being permanently
saved? I'm still learning all of the ins and outs of Ribbon customization so
perhaps our resident expert, Patrick Schmid, will see this and be able
enlighten us. :)

HELP! Not quite sure that I understand the posting (below), but the heading
describes my problem exactly. I found out about adding the "Send to Mail
Recpient" command to the Quick Access Toolbar about a month ago, and have
been using it VERY successfully (for "eblasts" of event notifications). All
of a sudden, when I tried to send a document the other day, the button had a
dim appearance and would not work. I have tried to remove and re-add it
several times, but it still has dim appearance and does not work. Any
layman's suggestions on what I can do to fix this? Thanx!
