Yep. Keeping in mind that mechanical translations are usually not very good.
I've had best luck by keeping sentence structure simple and working them
back and forth in the translator (tedious at best), of course a basic
understanding of the language really helps.

| Karin,
|
| I tried the code snippet you referenced and uploaded it to a test site. It
| does work...sorta....sometimes. Most of the page I uploaded is translated
| fairly well, but not all the text. Also, some of the links don't work, in
| that they take me to my regular pages in English.
|
| I think Rob was saying in his post that the best way to use this is to
| translate all the text using the tool, and create separate sites or pages
in
| the alternative languages. The reason the original page worked ok was that
| the pages were exceptionally simple. Note also the link you gave me is
| talking about translating a blog page which would be primarily text with
no
| special formatting, special fonts or special layout. You are using some
non
| web fonts, that won't be translated. Furthermore, I don't think that even
if
| you get your snippet to work, it will render the pages correctly in FF. I
| used Pub 2000 for a test, and it worked pretty well, but my Pub 2003 test
| did not work in FF. The Publisher 2003 code just doesn't seem to render
| correctly in FF after going through the Google translation process. Your
| mileage may vary...
|
| But to continue, I think Rob was suggesting using the service to translate
| your text to a different language and then using that translated text in
| multiple Publisher files. Then you would Publish to the web, and upload
| those alternative language versions to subfolders on your host, and cross
| link the versions. One of the challenges is that you will have to write
the
| links in the alternative language. You are talking about a lot of work.
|
| Here is an example of a Spanish and English version of a Publisher built
| website:
http://www.somoscapazes.org/
| where the primary site is in Spanish, and the second language is built
with
| a second Publisher file, and then uploaded to a subfolder "english". Just
| click on the "English" link in the upper left corner of the default
Spanish
| version (
http://www.somoscapazes.org/english/index.htm), and "Espanol" on
| the English version. You would create subfolders to contain your other
| language versions.
|
| Here is another two language site where the site is organized a bit
| different:
|
http://www.bollnascamping.se/
| Just study how the links are written to understand how the directory is
| organized.
|
| I do think that in both these examples you have bilingual people who wrote
| the two versions, and understand the subtle and major differences in the
| languages. One risk you have is not knowing exactly what the Google
| translation really says.
|
| Anyway, if you get a multi-language site built, let us know. It would be
fun
| to see how you do it.
|
| And before I go...congrats on getting your main site redone correctly....
