Angir,
I'm sorry but you cannot set a maximum for material resources. When you
use material resources in Project, it will tell you how much you need
regardless of how much is actually available.

I suggest you set up a spare text field for the tasks where you need to
define a maximum material resource and then manually track usage against
that maximum value.

Thankx John….
Thanks for your prompt reply…..
I went mad searching for that particular option. I was quite sure that it’s
not available in MS Project 2003. We have this option in Primavera Project
Planner. One of my professors was eating my head at the time of my final
exams of MS Project; he wanted me to add max units to material resources.
Obviously I failed to do so and got fewer score. This was about a month and
half back. Now I will be appearing for the same in this semester for class
improvement. Do you have any idea about MS project 2007? Do we have this
option in MS project 2007?

2007 does have a budget resource that can track the total maximum amount
that can be spent on a particular item but it tracks dollars, not quantity.

Thakx Steve House,

I appreciate your reply but I am looking for an option where I can set
maximum available “Material†type resources as constrain to the entire
project. This can be done for the “work†type resources, but I want to know
wheather it is possible for “Material†type resources. This should be done
even prior to the budget plan so as to create “budget with constrainsâ€.

Do you have any clue about this?

I appreciate your reply but I am looking for an option where I can set
maximum available ³Material² type resources as constrain to the entire
project. This can be done for the ³work² type resources, but I want to know

Angir,
The answer is the same as yesterday, Project does not offer that feature.

By the way, if you had a class with MS Project and the professor docked
you for not setting maximum units for material resources, you need to
show him this thread of responses.
