Adding minutes and seconds together

I need to create columns of minutes and seconds, as in 2:45, and have them added together at the bottom of a column. I will have about 60 values that need to be added together. Excel seems to convert 2:45 to 2:45am, and the sum ends up being a clock time. For example, if I add 0:30, 1:30, 12:30, I get a result of 2:30, instead of 14:30. How do I create a function that will give me a total sum of minutes and seconds, rather than the current time after a given number of elapsed minutes?

Hi Linda -

It's because of the formatting you have applied to the cells. When you
format the cells for AM/PM they're interpreted as Time of Day rather than
Hours & Minutes. Format the cells - including the one with the calculation
using the first format in the Format> Cells - Number - Time [13:30] & you
should have what you need.
