Adding more options in a drop down list

I would like to add to a drop down list that is in a column of an excel
spreadsheet. I can insert a line and then when I try to add or change the
drop down list, I get the following error:
"THE VALUE YOU ENTERED IS NOT VALID. A USER HAS RESTRICTED VALUES THAT CAN
BE ENTERED INTO THIS CELL."

I received this spreadsheet from a coworker that had created it. I believe
they may have copied the information from another spreadsheet. Is it possible
she brought some protected information with it?

The dropdown list is most likely created through Data Validation and will
limit user to what is on the list.

If you want to type something other than what is in the dropdown you must
uncheck the error alert.

This won't add to the items in the list but will allow you to type something
not on the list.

If you want to permanently add to the list, you must edit the source list
range.

Data Validation>Allow>List>Source.

See where the list comes from then edit that source.

There is no source listed.

If you have a Data Validation dropdown list with items to choose you "must"
have a source for that list.

Either a defined range like =MyList entered in the Source dialog.

Or a comma de-limited list in the Source dialog.

Are you sure you have a DV dropdown list?

When you select the cell does an arrow appear at right side of cell?
