Adding multiple pictures and captioning

I have an application where I need to add multiple pictures, sometimes
over 20, to a Word doc. Word XP now allows the selection of multiple
pictures at one time. However, I am having trouble having them go int
the doc in an acceptable manner. I would like to have them in seperate
locations, and be able to enter or have entered automatically, a
caption for each picture.
I have seen the pictures enter stacked on top of each other or in a
solid column with no space between and no captions.

Please help me understand the subtleties of the process. I also would
be willing to create a macro that would automate the process once the
pictures were selected, it that is necessary to enter them
efficiently. We are trying to avoid the laborious process of entering
and captioning them one by one.
Thanks for any suggestions

Hi Steve,

Chances are the 'stacked' pictures you've seen are in a borderless
table -- very handy for that sort of stuff. Or, they might simply
be inserted inline, with a single hard return between them. You
can write macro code to achieve just about any reasonable and
consistent arrangement. Let's hear the specifics of what you need.

BTW, if Word XP does indeed allow you to select multiple pictures
at a time (I haven't looked), it's still likely that your macro
code will process them singly. Or, if you envisioned having a
macro first offer you the Insert Picture dialog, from which you
would select multiple pictures) and then proceed to manhandle
them, that's probably also doable -- but you'd need an XP-level
advisor for that.
