adding notes to flaged email?

Is it possible to add notes to flaged email?

Lets say that I received an email that I flaged for follow up, which I
completed by a return phone call. Is there a way to add a small note to that
particular email stating what action I have taken, for future refrence rather
than moving that email to task or to notes

Right click the flag column-> Add reminder... and type your custom message
in the Flag To rule.

other than by flags or editing the message, not natively. There is a utility
you can use.
