Adding numbered outlines to a bulleted list in outline view

Hi. I'm taking notes in outline view. I'm down to the third level of an
outline, and now I want to add a numerical list of five things. When I
click on the "numbered outline" icon, it changes everything - the entire
structure - from bulleted list to numbers. Other times - and I'm not sure
when or how - I get the numbered outlines, but the numbers are roman or
letters, based upon the level of the outline. Isn't there a simple way to
insert a numbered list at ANY point of a bulleted outline?

I may have answered my own question. In the middle of the bulleted outline,
I simply typed the number "1" next to my item, then typed the item. When I
then hit the "return " key, the number "2" automatically was generated.
Very cool.
