adding resources to projects based on availability

Hi

Any help on this really appreciated..

At any one time we have approx 40 - 50 web projects running with approx 6
developers available as resources and 4 designers.

All this is running under a pilot of project server for the moment until we
work out how we are going to use the system.

So the question is what is the easiest / recommended way of viewing what
developers/ designers availablity is at any moment in time...

e.g I have a new project that i want to schedule which as say 5 days
development and 2 days design and 2 days testing, how do I therfore try and
view / work out who is avaiable to work on the project?

At the moment I have a large offline Project file split into top level tasks
as resourse names with time/task/job per person under which allows me a nice
over view of availablity etc.. - obviously this is a hack but has worked in
the past but now i want to use Project server to do it properly!!!!

Any views help mostly appreciated...

JMO,

Have you investigated the potential of "Generic Resources" - you can invest
these with skills, using the Enterprise Resource Outline Codes 20 - 29 which
support Multi Value selections. Provided yo define the skill sets of your
real people in the Enterprise Resource Pool and assign Generic Resources to
the tasks you want to resource you can then use the "Build Team from
Enterprise" function and by selecting a Generic Resource on the right hand
side and clicking the "Match" button find suitable candidates for the work in
your project - the resulting matches should be for both the skill and with
availability in the timespan of your project.

If you want more information on exploiting Generic Resources and the MV
Resource Outline Codes I can provide an explanatory document covering this
feature.

Hi Dominic

Sounds very interesting if you could send / point to a url of the document
that would be great!

Kind Regards
