Adding Tasks

Hi - novice question coming up!

I've been creating a list of tasks in Gantt Chart view.

When I add a new task the start and finish dates are
greyed out - I suppose they must be dependent on
something else (or something!) but I haven't set any
restrictions that I'm aware of and I can't see why this
is happening.

Help please

This is unexpected behaviour.

What version are you using? What steps (and try to describe them
precisely) are you doing for each task?
